Sophie joined the First Marathon Buddy Community prior to completing her first marathon in May 2026! She ran the Garmin Marathon in Durham, NC. Congrats on joining the marathoner club, Sophie!

Q: What's your favorite race you've ever run?

A: My first marathon - the Garmin Marathon in Durham, NC, in May 2026. It was a great course, a rewarding challenge, and seeing my husband and friends throughout the race was incredibly touching. They joked that they felt like storm chasers, and I've never felt so supported.

Q: What is your favorite running memory?

A: Every Fourth of July, my family runs the “4 on the 4th” race in Bridgton, Maine, where I was born. Nine of us run at our own pace and then find each other at the finish line.

Q: What is your favorite running mantra?

A: “I get to do this.” It reminds me what a privilege it is to have the health and flexibility to do what I love.

Q: What do you enjoy most about running and/or the running community?

A: Running gives me both connection with friends and solitude, depending on what I need that day.

Q: Why did you join the First Marathon Buddy Program?

A: As a first-time marathoner, I loved hearing everyone’s marathon stories and learning from runners who had already been through the experience.

Q: What are your current running goals?

A: I'm signed up for my second marathon - the Richmond Marathon in November 2026 - and hoping to build more speed and strength while still enjoying the process.

Q: Is there a fun fact about you you’d like to share?

A: I'm a French-American dual citizen, and one of my bucket-list goals is to run the Paris Marathon someday!

Bonus Question! What advice would you give someone training for their first marathon?

  1. Turn each of the longest runs (15 to 20-milers for me) into a field trip to nearby towns with parks and running greenways so that it always feels fresh and fun.

  2. Use those runs to practice your fueling and hydration. I used a running belt where I kept my soft water flasks, Huma gels and Honey Stinger waffles.

  3. On race day, focus on feeling steady and happy rather than chasing a specific finish time.

  4. Finally, I recommend using the (free) Rally app for your first marathon. I first learned about it from the MFM community! Hearing a new voice message from friends and family at the start of each mile was an amazing surprise and a huge boost during the race.
